In “A Thousand and One Nights” we read: “Those who have not seen Cairo have not seen the world. Its streets are paved with gold, its women are magic and the Nile is a miracle”. Here is an opportunity to explore Africa’s largest city and the “secret” capital of the Arab world. In the old quarter bazaar you will discover the East with all five senses and see the precious treasures of a centuries old civilisation. On the outskirts of Cairo are the huge pyramids at Giza. The subsequent cruise on the Nile is the best and most comfortable way to witness the cultural traces of Ancient Egypt. They range, like jewels, along the banks of the river, particularly along the stretch between majestic Luxor and picturesque Aswan. In between the fascinating excursions you can spend time on the sundeck, with a fabulous view of the luxuriant riverside – a sea of green palm trees, as a foreground to the colours and shapes of the unforgiving desert. We offer this cruise on board the MS CROWN JEWEL.
Tuesday Cairo Individual travel to Cairo. On arrival you will be met by our local representative. After completing the visa formalities you will be transferred to your hotel.
Wednesday Cairo Our full day excursion is centred on the Egyptian capital. We first visit the National Museum to give you an insight into the history of Egypt. After lunch we visit the Alabaster Mosque on the citadel, from where there are panoramic views over the city. The tour ends with some time at leisure to explore the lively bazaar.
Thursday Cairo – Luxor This morning we invite you to join us on a full day excursion to the region around Cairo to see the historical sites of the Sphinx and the pyramids at Giza, one of the best preserved wonders of the ancient world. After lunch we visit the Open Air Museum in Memphis to admire the Alabaster Sphinx and the statue of Rameses. Finally we visit the oldest pyramid in Egypt. This is the 5000 year old stepped pyramid, built by Esculap at Saccara. During the evening we fly with Egyptair from Cairo to Luxor, where we transfer to the MS CROWN JEWEL.
Friday Luxor This morning we visit the Temple in the former capital, Luxor (Thebes). The highlight of the Karnak temple is the massive room of pillars with its 32 pillars. Then, in the afternoon, we cast off en route for Esna.
Saturday Esna / Edfu Our morning visit is to the Temple of the God of Creation, Chnum, with his ram’s head, situated in the centre of the city, well below present-day street-level. This is one of the last temples built in Ancient Egypt and is famous for its sculptures and inscriptions. During the afternoon we arrive in Edfu, where we take a horse-drawn coach to the best preserved temple in Egypt, the Temple of Edfu, dedicated to the god Horus, with his falcon’s head. During the evening we cruise on to Kom Ombo, where the ship moors overnight.
Sunday Aswan In the early morning the MS CROWN JEWEL sets off for Aswan, which many regard as Egypt’s most beautiful city. We recommend the tour to the dam, built in 1970, which, here in the desert, has transformed the river into the 500km (350 mile) long Lake Nasser. During the afternoon we visit the as yet unfinished obelisks, followed by a boat trip to the idyllically situated temple on the island of Philae. During the evening there is time to explore the colourful market in Aswan, which is well known principally for its huge range of spices.
Monday Aswan This morning there is the chance to book on board for an excursion, by plane or by coach, to Abu Simbel, to see the grandiose Temple of Ramses II, with its huge statues. The temple was taken down and rebuilt as part of the dam project. In the afternoon there is a tour, either in a sailing barge (felucca) or by motor launch around Lord Kitchener Island and past the famous “Old Cataract” Hotel, where once Agatha Christie stayed.
Tuesday Kom Ombo During the early morning we depart from Asswan to sail downstream to Kom Ombo. Only a short distance from the quay, situated on a mound above the river, is the double temple, built in honour of the god Sobek, with his crocodile head, and Horus. After this visit the ship sets sail again, via Edfu, back to Luxor.
Wednesday Luxor and the Valley of the Kings This morning we offer an excursion to the west bank of the Nile to visit the majestic rock temple of Hatchpsut, the massive Memnon statues and then on into the Valley of Kings, where we see the most famous and most richly decorated royal tombs. The afternoon is then at leisure. On your final evening we recommend a visit to the stupendous son et lumiere show in the Temple of Karnak (bookable on board).
Thursday Luxor After breakfast it is time to say our farewells and transfer to the airport for the return flight. We hope you will leave with many happy memories of your time in Egypt.
